[[Aaron's trying his hand at baking. He's not that great at it.

Still, he wants to try and is not going to let a little thing like lack of skill stop him.

The kitchen is a bit of a mess.]]

[Phone | Unfiltered]

Hey, it's Aaron.

Umm... I tried to make a cake and I am not sure it came out right. Anyone willing to try it and maybe offer some advice?

[Action | 1251 Williams Road | Open to all]

[[He is there with the lump he calls a cake.

He used too much salt and sugar.

He also forgot to do something to keep it from sticking to the pan, so it's not pretty.]]

Try is the key word here I think.

I was trying to make one that just says "birthday cake" in the drone mom's cook book.

The recipes here are actually quite straightforward, so it shouldn't be hard to follow them. Did you try the batter when you were making it? That's a good way of gauging the end result, if you're worried about making big mistakes. That said... A birthday cake? Is it for someone's birthday soon, Aaron?

Oh, was I supposed to taste the batter?

There aren't birthdays coming up too soon, but I figured this year I'd try something other than making people some toy for their birthdays.

It would give you an idea of what you're doing, yes. You don't draw blindfolded, right? You look at it to see how you're doing, and cooking is similar!

It may still be best to stick with what you're most familiar with, but any chance is also a good one to start learning. What type of cake are you making?

Oh, I never thought of it that way.

I think it's just a simple white cake with decorative frosting, though I'm not too worried about the frosting part yet.

Now you have! Does it make sense?

You should be able to buy it at the grocery store, if you're too worried about getting it wrong. If you don't do it properly, it'll be just like wet sugar lumped together. It's edible, but that's not a very pleasant texture. What step are you on now?

It does make sense.

Actually, I think I am on the wet sugar lump step... I kinda wanted to see what I could do.

...Oh, goodness... You're almost done, then? What about the cake itself?

Basically done I think.

Well, I thought that was the cake. The moist, not right tasting lump. I think I needed to put something in the pan to prevent sticking.

Um, yes. Butter works well. Ah, may I ask just... exactly what you put in it? Have you used the right measuring tools? ...You didn't mix up sugar with salt, did you? [She sounds hesitant, too... ;;]

I didn't have all the right measuring things, but I saw my foster mom do it by hand once. You know, eye it up in the palm of your hand?

But...! That's after a lot of practice and experience! You're good at building things and mechanics, right Aaron? After you've worked with the materials enough, you know which ones are of the right durability to serve as parts, and how much you need to make what you have in mind. Do you think that someone new to mechanics would do well, if they replace wires without knowing the voltage just because the outside is of the same color?

Date: 2011-10-14 04:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
I still wouldn't switch wires from the original blue prints...

I always thought that was the difference with cooking. Like, you can make different measurements and you have a time limit. Building stuff is easy, find the part, insert part.

From: [personal profile] ex_seventh238
That's because you would know what you're doing, it's not your first time. They're not that different! As long as you have everything measured and ready in advance, it's a question of following closely a recipe and time the oven properly. Once you're good enough at building, you start to customize, right? Seasoning by taste thanks to practice is like that, too. But when you're just starting out, you have to do the cooking by the book, or you'll mess up. Will you be trying again?

Yeah, I plan to. Thanks for the advice on that one, I'll see about set up first.

You're welcome. [........]

Would you like help? [Not that he can see or hear (she still sounds like she always does!), but she is tapping the floor with her foot right now, no it's not a nervous tic or anything!... just.. can't... leave... alone.....]

From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Umm... sure? I guess any help I can get is good.

Okay! Do you have the ingredients to make a new one, and are you planning to start over now? [BAKING IS SRS BSNS.]

Date: 2011-10-15 02:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
I have the ingredients... I could start again now if I had to, I think.

[[Aaron, what have you gotten yourself into?]]

May I come over right away?

[NOTHING! She just... legit knows how to bake properly. LEARN FROM A "PRO", AARON...]

From: [identity profile] pants-yourmove.livejournal.com
Sure... I could use the help.

[[Aaron is far from a pro when it comes to baking.]]

From: [personal profile] ex_seventh238
Okay! I'll see you in a bit, Aaron. You don't have to do anything in the meanwhile, but if you want to, maybe cleaning your kitchen a bit would be a good idea!

[It's okay he'll be getting a thorough 101 whether he likes it or not. She was raised as a baker after all. So hopefully he'll be getting skill +1 by the time all this is over... :v]

((OOC: Do you mind if we handwave the whole thing, Spazzy? orz I'm semi-swamped in schoolwork among other things right now, and the results here should be easy to determine? o\;;))

((OOC: That works out perfectly, thank you! ;u;/ LEVEL UP! You can now bake a SOMEWHAT AVERAGE CAKE! /o/))
